- Dorper news for 2009 from Hounslow
- The economic slump has definitely affected all forms of farming in S.A. this year.
We are however lucky to have been able to still sell our products.
- Our production sale in February had a good clearance
percentage with the highest price ram
going to Augsberg Agricultural College in the Western Cape.
- This sale was followed by the National sale in Bloemfontein in March.
We again had a good clearance, achieving the 3rd highest average.
- At the Philipolis Veld Ram sale in February, our rams again did well with 100% clearance.
- The first National Veld ram Sale was held in July -
the sale was a success even though I felt our rams were too young.
- Our Diamond sale in Kimberley was good as usual, with a 100% clearance and a good average
- The Spring National Sale, in Beaufort West, was not a very good sale.
We however did very well with the highest and second highest priced ram.
- This sale was followed by our spring production sale in Middelburg.
The sale was down on last year, but a good clearance was achieved.
- In September, I was asked to judge the Namibian National Championships in
Keetmanshoop.
The sheep were of a high standard and were a pleasure to judge.
Marion and I spent the weekend after the show, at the Kalagadi National Park.
- The Overseas side of our farming has also slowed down, due to the economic climate.
- The Australian National Dorper sale in Dubbo -
Dell's Dorpers achieved the 3rd highest average price.
Our ewes also sold very well.
- I have been to Brazil twice this year.
At the feinco in Sao Paulo in March, many animals from our stud received prizes.
Most points in the Dorper section went to Campo Verde dorpers - Congratulations.
They also had some of our progeny on show.
- May, 2008
- The results for the National Dorper show in Dubbo, Australia were as follows:
- (1)Dorper Ram Lamb 50kg and Under - 1st place - Goondi. Goondi became Junior Champion and was also Reserve Grand Champion Ram on show.

- April, 2008
- This month our stud is 50 years old. Our first inspection was held on the 28th April, 1958. We celebrated on the 28th March by having a party at Hounslow. Family, friends and Dorper family joined us to celebrate. The weather was perfect and fun was had by all.
- March, 2008
- The Annual Autumn National Ram Sale was held in Bloemfontein where our rams sold well - highest price was R30,000.00. We achieved the 3rd highest average.
- Marion, Robert and I went to Brazil to the Feinco ( Dorper Show ) in Sao Paulo. It was very impressive with about 600 good quality sheep on show. The Dorper is really going places in Brazil and With dedicated breeding programs and enthusiasm - this can only be good for the Dorper Breed in Brazil.
- February, 2008
- At the annual veldram sale held in Phillipolis, we again had 1 of only 5 merit rams on sale. This ram was not only a merit ram, he put on the most weight on the veld ram phase - 40kg. Our rams are managing to hold their own on all the Veld ram sales in the country.
- The rams I choose to participate on the veld ram sales, are carefully chosen with figures I have from the Dorper 21 project. I feel that the Dorper 21 project is a necessity for all breeders and in my opinion, though the Dorpers Breeders in S.A. have nearly perfected the breeding of their wonderful sheep, we can improve even further by
measuring and weighing our sheep.
- January, 2008
- The highest price for John Dell Dorpers at the Graaff Reinet sale was R50,000 for

- The sheep and goats were of a high standard. I would like to congratulate Mr. Luis Teixeira and Mr. Eduardo Teixeira on showing the Grand Champion Ewe and Ram.
- I also visited ranches in Brazil and was very impressed with the quality of the Dorpers I saw. I think there is a very bright future for the Dorper in Brazil.

- After our production sale we paid a working visit to Mexico, via London and Dallas, Texas. It took Marion and I about 48 hours to get to Monterey in Mexico. I did my first inspection at the ranch of Mr. Gerardo Alanis. I saw a sheep being lassoed for the first time in my life - just as the cowboys lasso cattle in the U.S.A.
